Spiva
director says she wants others to experience art’s
transforming powers

From
the Director
Jo
Mueller
November
is a month of reflection, for giving thanks.
At Spiva during this 60th birthday year, November
gives
us a chance to say thanks to the artists.
Not just the artists who contribute so much to Spiva
through their energy and talent—think about
the 12x12 artists who annually participate in such
a generous tradition.
Not
just the artists who volunteer their time and expertise.

Not
just the artists whose determination and perseverance led
to the creation of the Guild that became Spiva Center for
the Arts—but thanks for artists in all the arts. What
impact does art have on a community? Where does a community
“hold” its musicians, its writers, its painters
and
sculptors and weavers; its industrial and graphic designers;
its illustrators and set decorators; its actors and singers
and dancers and poets?
When does a community notice? When does a community acknowledge
the value that art adds to the quality of life of a place?
How about now? It’s a great time to attend theatrical
performances, concerts, exhibits, films. It’s a great
time to be thankful for artists and whatever it is that
drives them to create, because they’re improving our
world.
Spiva occupies one building in downtown Joplin. It is a
place you can catch up with many, many visual artists. Take
in the Membership Show. That’s 100 or more right there.
Notice the artists
who are creating work for the Great Holiday Bazaar, the
artists featured in the Gift Shop. Take it all in. Let them
inspire you. Let them take you other places. Let them astonish
you. And if they move you, say thanks. An easy way to do
that? Buy art!
An event is coming in early December…a chance for
Spiva to say thanks for its member artists. Because so many
artists are participating in the Membership Show, for the
first time each is
limited to displaying a single piece. The Gift of Art on
Tuesday, December 4, will be an afternoon to show off a
bit, to meet with interior designers, home builders, business
people, art lovers. Spiva
is a place, offering artists a chance to connect and begin
to build relationships with future patrons.
Why did Empire District choose to sponsor the Membership
Show? Because they want to be part of the excitement and
the celebration of the incredible talent that surrounds
us, right here.
It’s November. We’re saying thanks!
